The passion and benefits of mma…

Interview with N.I.C.C. Owner Thomas Holder

Question: You've had an impressive career in MMA. What first drew you to the sport, and what keeps you so passionate about it?

Tom: "For me, MMA started with my wrestling background. I’ve been wrestling since I was young, and that foundation gave me the discipline and work ethic that carried over into MMA. After wrestling, I wanted to continue competing and challenging myself, and MMA was the perfect way to do that. It allowed me to expand my skill set beyond wrestling—learning striking, Jiu-Jitsu, and all the other elements of the sport. Over time, it became more than just competition; it became a passion. MMA constantly pushes you to grow, adapt, and overcome adversity, and that’s what keeps me motivated every day."

Question: Many people see MMA as just a combat sport, but you emphasize it as a great way to stay healthy and active. Can you talk about that?

Tom: "Absolutely. A lot of people think MMA is just about stepping into the cage and fighting, but it’s really one of the most complete forms of fitness training out there. It builds endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination all at once. You’re not just lifting weights or running on a treadmill—you’re training your body and mind in ways that keep you engaged. The combination of striking, grappling, and functional movements works every muscle group, so you’re constantly improving your overall athleticism. Plus, it’s way more fun than a traditional gym routine!"

Question: That makes sense! What would you say to someone who’s hesitant to try MMA because they’re intimidated or think it’s only for fighters?

Tom: "That’s a common misconception, but MMA is for everyone. At Northern IL Combat Club, we have all types of people training—some want to compete, but many just want to get in shape, build confidence, or learn self-defense. You don’t have to be a fighter to train like one. The best part is that training in MMA isn’t just about getting physically stronger; it teaches discipline, mental toughness, and problem-solving. I always tell people: give it a shot. The hardest part is just walking through the door that first time."

Question: With your experience as a coach, how have you seen MMA change people’s lives beyond just fitness?

Tom: "I’ve seen people come in struggling with confidence, dealing with stress, or just looking for something to push them—and this sport gives them a sense of purpose. It’s more than just training; it’s a support system. You’re surrounded by a team that pushes you, holds you accountable, and celebrates your progress. I’ve had students lose weight, build confidence, and even change their entire outlook on life because they found something that challenged them and gave them direction. That’s why I do what I do."

Question: "That’s really inspiring. Any final thoughts for someone considering MMA but still on the fence?"

Tom: "Just take that first step. MMA isn’t about being the best on day one—it’s about showing up, putting in the work, and seeing yourself improve over time. Whether you’re here to compete, get in shape, or just try something new, there’s a place for you. It’s a journey, and the benefits—physically and mentally—are worth it."
